Dubai Food District to become world’s largest food hub
New infrastructure links producers to more than 20 international markets globally
DUBAI – DP World has officially unveiled the Dubai Food District, a major expansion and rebranding of the Al Aweer Central Fruit and Vegetable Market, set to become one of the world’s largest and most advanced food trade centres.
The new district will more than double the existing market’s footprint to 29 million square feet, combining trade, storage, processing and distribution into a single, connected ecosystem.
The project, announced in July 2024 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aims to strengthen regional food supply chains, increase trade capacity, and support long-term food security. Phase one of the expansion is scheduled to begin in 2027, with subsequent phases set to enhance the market’s scale and efficiency.
Dubai Food District
Dubai Food District will cater to a wide range of products, including fruits, vegetables, dairy, gourmet foods, staples and specialty items, positioning Dubai as a global gateway for food trade. The market will feature cold stores and temperature-controlled warehousing, primary and secondary processing facilities, digital back-office solutions, cash-and-carry options, and a gourmet food hall for both businesses and consumers.
The Al Aweer market, first opened in 2004, currently supports over 2,500 traders supplying fresh produce across the UAE and the wider region. The expansion will preserve Al Aweer’s central role in the food ecosystem while increasing speed to market and reducing supply chain risks for food businesses.
